What is the name of your Blog?San Jose Dessert Examiner
What is your name?
Joy
Where are you from? (include country, state and/or city)
I blog from California, but desserts are universal.
Please describe your blog
I blog about desserts. I have lots of recipes, food facts and news. I like to add slide shows and videos to make it more fun and because they are worth a thousand words. The whole idea is to have fun while finding dessert information and recipes.
Describe the main purpose of your blogging, what are you trying to accomplish?
I am a professional journalist, so I love to write. Blogging is a great way to be creative with what I am passionate about.
What blogging platform do you do and why?
I use Examiner and also Blogger, and like both. I left Wordpress.com.
What do you blog the most about?
It's all about desserts! Desserts make people happy. Desserts are for celebrations and bring a joyful end to any meal. Just try saying ice cream without smiling. :-) There is also a lot more to desserts than recipes. Being a journalist, I find a lot of newsworthy dessert articles to write about. For example, I recently wrote about a race car fueled by chocolate, and for Memorial Day, I wrote about the 6oth anniversary of the "Chocolate Pilot" who dropped Hershey's chocolate candy bars from a bomber for the children of Europe. For many of these children, this was the only chocolate they tasted during WWII and the only semblance of dessert. And of course, there are tips, ingredient facts and recipes to help readers bring joy to their families.
What kind of blogs make you angry?
I just don't visit the kind that are negative, have an ax to grind, use foul language, try to scam, scrapers and very poorly written blogs.
Give five of your best blogging tips.
1. Develop a friendly voice; 2. Use photos; 3. Especially for beginners, join a carnival or roundups. 4. Comment on other blogs; 5. Help other bloggers; your benefits will be multiplied.
Did you start blogging for the purpose of making money and if so, are you making enough money?
I started blogging mostly for a creative outlet, but was open to making money, of course. Very few bloggers make enough money, and for those who do, it's usually because their blogs helped them get discovered for a book, movie deal or other outlet, not from their blogs themselves. The millions of other bloggers out there give up before a year is up.
Do you use Digg, and why or why not?
No. It has traditionally been mostly for techies.
Do you use Stumbleupon, and why or why not?
Rarely, but I have found a few fun sites.
What promotional techniques work best for you and why?
I love Twitter. Otherwise, good old-fashioned people skills are still the best by networking with other bloggers on their blogs, social platforms like Twitter or forums for your individual blog topic.
