An attempt to intorduce the cuisine of each country and region in Africa
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I am married to a West African woman and she introduced me to West African cookery and I already had an interest in North African cuisine. The website is an attempt at introducing the cuisines of this diverse continent. It's also an attempt at raising money to pay for an operation to save my father-in-law's life.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My first website was Nemeton: http://www.celtnet.org.uk an attempt at presenting the Celtic gods and Welsh texts (with translations) to a much wider internet audience)
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Each of my websites and sub-domanis contain the name 'Nemeon' which is anceint Celtic for the 'Sacred Grove' as I'm attempting to present information related to various cultures around the world.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
This site is the first attempt to bring together all the cuisines of Africa in one place. To go through each region and each and every country. This is presented in the context of ethnographic and demographic information about the country.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
The eventual aim is to turn all the recipes an infromation into a book that can be published. I also aim to live off the website if at all possible. But the real aim of the website is to use it to help the Liberian and Sierra Leonian refugees of Senegal.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Thus far there's been far more investment into the website that I've been able to get out of it. But I hope that will now change as convert my efforts into marketing and publicizing the site.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would like more automated ways of generating content for my site, and to give the effort of publicizing the site into someone else's care.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Only if I quit my full-time job
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
It's taken much longer than I imagined to get all the content for the website going and the balance between creating content and advertising that content is a little skewed.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It's a lot more effort than I originally thought to create new content.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The recipes site has been running for a year. This is a passion of mine, so it will keep going in some shape or form even if it doesn't yield over-night success.
