Hens; Chicken Gizzards, Necks and Feet

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/28/07 07:09

Colombia, chicken: Chicken Necks and Gizzards
On the way to the Salt Church (a church 200 meters below the surface of the earth in a salt mine) a little ways north of Bogota, we stopped at a restuarant and were a little disappointed that the only food on the menu was chicken.

We left and went to one across the street. The light bulb turned on, the name of the first restaurant was "Gallina" or "Hen" in English. The new restaurant had pretty much the same menu: chicken!

My friend was delighed that they offerred gizzards, necks and feet. What is shown here is just the start of his meal, which included the grizzle parts of the chicken, soup, and a big plate of rice and lots more chicken meat.

All for a few bucks.

Health Food at Burger King

By Bill at 05/26/07 06:21
Last night I happened to visit Burger King, though I didn't make a purchase. I saw a nice display case out front that showed a couple of "healthy" salads.

However, right next to them a couple of cans of Budwiser beer was featured. They make it so easy to wash away any health benefits!

Dinner in Costa Rica... opps.. I mean... Costa Rica Insects..

By Bill at 05/25/07 09:46
Leaf Eating Ants in Costa Rica

After living in Costa Rica a while you start to realize that all the food is pretty bland and cooked so much that you really can't tell what it is.

Now I read in a blog about some guy that finally went after his insects with some super toxic bug killers. A pitty when you read so much about ecotourism in Costa Rica. Back to the topic at hand... food and Costa Rica.

I think there are some great ways to spice up your meals in some delicious and nutritious ways. My first suggestion would be a leaf eating ant salad.

Here you see a photo a leaf eating ant, carrying a chunk of plant leaf larger than itself away. Can you image a salad of these. You can just pull them off any large tree near by. You'll get plenty of greens and some extra protein from the ants themselves.

Be extremely careful not to try this near any poisonious plants, or where someone has been using the toxic bug killers.

A few large leafing eat ant green salads every day should help keep the annoying ant population down and provide you with an tasty meal. If you eat them life, the ants crawling in your mouth should be a great change from the usual bland mixture of rice and beans without any salt or other spices.

Crunchy and great flavor too!

Maybe you can offer your suggestions for other insect meals in Costa Rica here...

Super Size it Because You want to be FAT!

By Bill at 05/25/07 06:26
Brian's post inspired my thought that instead of "fries with that" you are now asked if you want to super size something.

My wife noticed that in Fast "Food" Restaurants in the United States a "small drink" is similar to the size of a "large drink" in South America. But they don't stop there... they want to make it even BIGGER.

Now what is the point of "super sizing" grease and sugar? Less is probably better! Yet, we are all convinced at the check out counter that MORE is better and not much more expensive.

The only clue must be that our subconscious goal is to become fat and not just a little fat, but SUPER SIZED FAT.

Now, my mother told me not long ago that Detroit Michigan had a new name... FAT CITY. I think if you step back and have a close look, its not just Detroit, but really FAT COUNTRY USA and we're not talking about everyone riding around in super sized SUV's (though pretty soon no one will fit in a compact car).

Now, I realize you can guzzle down a 32 oz (or maybe two) glass of sugarred up soda pop (or drop the sugar and add a bunch of chemicals) with no problem as you swollow your grease burger and grease fries without even chewing.. that river of brown liquid makes it easy to slide down. Did you check if the grease was rancid?

My question is whether you could chugg 32 oz of pure filtered water with that same disgusting "food"? I think not, because deep down you really do want to be FAT!

People Know Your Age Thanks to Would You Like Fries with That? Question

By Brian White at 05/24/07 17:09
Remember the old joke you used to blast one another for getting degrees in less-than-useful fields like sociology or philosophy, the one where you'd cap it off with "Would you like fries with that?" It was funny because it implied your friend would be flipping burgers until long after the degree was paid off. It doesn't work any more, it just makes you seem old.

You may not realize it, but nobody has asked you if you wanted fries with the ubiquitous "that" in the last fifteen or twenty years.

Value combos have killed the joke, and nobody sent me a memo. It could have been updated to "Would you like that super-sized?", but people from that era don't find the humor intrinsic to the insult.

So if you don't want to feel over 30 (or over 40, for that matter,) pick a new joke, the time came and went and you weren't even aware of it yet… now you are.

Deep Fried Apples at McDonalds?

By Bill at 05/23/07 13:28
Costa Rica, health food: Apples on Display at McDonalds
I noticed that McDonalds is selling apples. I can't imagine that customers of McDonalds would be the health conscious types that would want to a crisp, natural apple that is good for them.

You know an apple a day keeps the doctor away. I just can't see those kind of people eating at McDonalds, whether they serve apples or not.

So I had a dream that these apples must not be served fresh and crisp as you see them lined up ready to be eaten... I think they must be deep fried first to fit in with the rest of their product line.

I could be wrong, but i'm afraid to buy one to find out.

Everything Tastes Like Chicken

By Bill at 05/23/07 09:42
Costa_Rica heredia REAL ESTATE IN COSTA RICA
I went out to eat the other day and ordered a regular salad. After a few bites I thought... hmm.. tastes like chicken. They must be having a bad day.

I sent the salad back and told them I wanted a hamburger. I can't stand hamburgers in Costa Rica because they cook them into a piece of cardboard and then some more.

It was a long wait for the hamburger, they really tried hard to make sure it was a cooked as it could be plus some without burning it. I think they might have deep fried it and then run it through on old style clothes ringer to get the grease out and then cook it some more.

Ok, finally I have my food. A greaseless hamburger and cold soggy french frieds that were "cooked" in a deep frier full of luke warm oil. Hmm... tastes like chicken! Damn!

I'm fed up and very hungry now. They have feed the hamburger to the rats but I suspect they won't be any more interested than I was.

Now, I'll order beef liver. No way can that taste like chicken. Beef liver comes out and I almost gag on my first bite! Still tastes like chicken.

I must have been hypnotised by the Dicovery Channel into thinking everything tastes like chicken. I might as well go catch an iguana and eat that as its supposed to taste like chicken!

And, no this is not a funny food story!

Funny Food Speeches

By Bill at 05/18/07 14:58
Did you ever hear a funny food speech? You know one where the bananas got up and started to sing and dance, if only to show off their intelligence levels?

It's not that funny, but it is certainly better than in Costa Rica. Rather than refrigerate their meat, they just scrape off the maggots and slap it on the grill. Ok, you probably don't believe me, but its a pretty funny food story anyway.

You could take your kids out to dinner and order an overcooked hamburger or a chicken salad sandwich and ask them to tell you a funny story.

If your kids are young you'll probably get the best funny food speech ever.
